Fixing – kernel: kvm: disabled by bios

On my HP Z210 workstation (Hewlett-Packard HP Z210 Workstation/1587h, BIOS J51 v01.47 07/18/201) I was annoyed and also bothered with the following error in journalctl -b:

kernel: kvm: disabled by bios

So I rechecked over the BIOS and finally found the location of the Intel Virtualization Technology switch under Security > System security

Intel Virtualization Technology switch in BIOS
Intel Virtualization Technology switch in BIOS

After reboot finally without the ‘kvm: disabled by bios’ error 🙂

VirtualBox Hardware Virtualization
VirtualBox Hardware Virtualization

BONUS was also hardware virtualization for VirtualBox

KVM disabled by bios

I was checking the boot log with journalctl -b and saw red text kernel: kvm: disabled by bios

Because I don’t use/need virtualization I blacklisted kvm module loading by adding a .conf file into /etc/modprobe.d

# /etc/modprobe.d/nokvm.conf
blacklist kvm

I double checked the module name with

$ lsmod |grep kvm
kvm  462848  0
